At a glance

When you cut prices for Black Friday, shoppers stop asking "how much?" and start wondering "what's wrong with it?". Big discounts make buyers cautious, driving them straight to your reviews for reassurance, not just on your website, but across Google and AI search tools.

However, on many online stores, search engines and AI tools can’t read these reviews because essential background code is missing. Before your offers go live, taking a few quick steps to verify that your reviews are visible to search engines and easy to read on mobile will help turn shopper doubt into sales.

The moment you decide to cut the price of your product, your shopper will stop asking "how much?", and instead start asking "what's wrong with it?". This is a side to discounting that gets forgotten in the planning phase for Black Friday and Cyber Monday (BFCM).

If you're running a discount this BFCM, you're in good company. Almost every store is, and most are sticking with the same offers as last year. In fact, Modern Retail+ research have reported that 81% of brand and retail businesses expect their 2026 discounts to match those from 2025.

But while a discount can bring more visitors to your site, a lower price can also make shoppers wonder what's wrong with it. So, this is not an argument to reduce your discounts. It’s about maximising the impact and effectiveness of the promotion you have already set in motion.

Why a lower price makes shoppers suspicious

Price is a signal. When it drops, shoppers can read it two ways: a good deal, or a reason to be careful.

Research on how shoppers read price suggests that once a discount gets big enough to notice, shoppers lean more on other signs of quality. What other buyers say about a product or product range is typically the first place they will go.

One merchant saw a version of this in September. Detailed in a Shopify Community thread, they shared that raising their signup offer from 10% to 20% dropped signups from about 4% to 2.5%. Community members replied that a 20%+ offer to first-time visitors can read as a “warning flag”.

This is a useful reminder that a bigger offer doesn't automatically get you more yeses. Sometimes it just gets you more questions.

Your discount sends shoppers straight to your reviews

Here’s the upside: when shoppers actively seek out proof at the exact moment they’re deciding whether to purchase, customer reviews are their primary destination.

But shoppers will look further than your product page for this. They’ll head to Google and increasingly ask AI tools. In fact, Adobe found that 31% of consumers prefer AI search for discovery.

Wherever your shoppers look, the question for them is the same: do other people buy this, and were they happy?

Your reviews might be invisible to Google and AI

But here’s the catch. On most stores we’ve scanned with our Growth Check tool, the reviews are right there on the page. But the code that lets machines read them is missing.

That code is called review schema. Think of it as a hidden label behind the scenes that explicitly tells Google and AI tools: "This text is a review, the rating is 5 stars, and there are 50 total reviews." Human shoppers can read the review text directly on your page, but search engines and AI tools rely on this hidden label to understand it.

So when someone asks a search engine or an AI assistant about your product, the reviews your customers took the time to write can become invisible. Because to a machine, the store has no reviews at all.

Four checks to run before your BFCM offers go live

To ensure your BFCM goes smoothly, check your store ahead of your offers going live.

Check your review app is producing review schema. Paste the URL of one of your product pages into Google's free Rich Results Test. If it finds no review or rating data, ask your review app's support team how to switch it on.
Check the products you're discounting most. These are the pages shoppers will doubt the hardest. Make sure they have reviews, and that the schema test passes on them too.
Check your reviews to check what shoppers can see. Open your product pages on your phone. Can you see the star rating near the price and the add-to-cart button, without scrolling?
If your reviews are thin, ask every buyer. Send a review request to everyone who bought recently, not just the happy ones. However, don't offer rewards for positive reviews. The FTC's Consumer Review Rule bans incentives tied to what a review says.

Let your reviews answer the question

Discounts draw shoppers in, but they also spark hesitation. Rather than scaling back your promotional strategy, focus on making reassurance straightforward and readily accessible.

Real reviews from real buyers are your answer. Make sure both shoppers and search tools can easily find them this week.

Not sure where your store stands? Run a Clearer Growth Check to see whether Google and AI tools can read your reviews, before your BFCM offer goes live.
